Self-portrait in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, 2021

Scarlett Gray (they/them) is a poet, artist, and sex worker

Gray’s work focuses on raw and gritty personal thoughts and stories all wrapped up in a pretty, albeit-tattered, bow. A huge proponent of talking about the harsh realities of personhood we've been conditioned not to talk about, they try not to flinch while working through their damages and secrets in front of an audience.

Whether it be a poetry collection working through past traumas, a cyanotype t-shirt printed with parts of their life-sized, naked body, earrings made from locks of their hair, or a twenty-minute-long pornographic film with a sultry, poetic voice-over, Scarlett Gray’s work may not be for the faint of heart. Their openness about their personal struggles stems from both an urge to be seen and heard on their own terms, as well as a desire to help destigmatize these, and other, themes. Through their own self-discovery and pushing of the boundaries of what society deems acceptable, they hope to make others feel more at home in our harsh world.
